Traditionally, all Foreign Exchange (FX or FOREX) has been transacted by Banks.
Banks tend to give poor exchange rates for amounts below £1,000,000. Banks typically charge 1.5% to 4% of the amount converted when dealing with personal or small business clients.
In response to the poor rates offered by Banks, Currency Brokers have become more mainstream over the last 10 years. Currency Brokers bulk transactions from many clients into larger amounts. They then trade these larger amounts on the wholesale currency markets which gains them better exchange rates. Currency Brokers can save money for clients when compared with transacting through a Bank. However, traditional Currency Brokers operate expensive business models as they employ large numbers of highly paid traders to price and book transactions over the telephone. The cost of these traders is passed onto the client in terms of poorer exchange rates. Traditional Currency Brokers typically charge 1.0% and 1.5% of the amount converted when dealing with personal or small business clients.
